White Level (Revised, 2015 - formerly White Level/Red Level Preview)

The White Level is designed for beginning readers and writers at the Grade 1/Alphabetic Stage. The 20 Word Lists focus on one syllable words with short vowels, (CVC, CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC), long vowels (CVCe and CCVCe), and high frequency words for writing. Each Word List includes 8 or 10 words. The White Level activities are five routines for exploring word structure and practicing accurate spelling of words: 1) Creating Word Families, 2) Sorting Words, 3) Dictation Practice – Words, 4) Dictation Practice – Sentences, and 5) Links for High Frequency Words.

Modified Red Level

The Modified Red Level Word lists are commensurate with beginning Grade 2/Within Word Stage. Each of the 25 Word Lists includes 10 pattern-based words. The Modified Red Level is designed for use with children who score below 40% on the Red Level Inventory and need additional time and practice to master the concept of multiple spellings for vowel patterns.

Red Level Word Lists

The Red Level Words are commensurate with Grade 2/Within Word Stage. Each of the 25 Word Lists includes 20 pattern-based words. A Word Sort, Guided Practice Chart, Dictation Paragraph, and Pre and Post Assessment Sentences are provided for each Word List. The Final Review Test can be used to assess growth at the end of the school year.

Orange Level Word Lists

The Orange Level Words are commensurate with Grade 3/Within Word Stage. Each of the 25 Word Lists includes 20 pattern-based words. A Word Sort, Guided Practice Chart, Dictation Paragraph, and Pre and Post Assessment Sentences are provided for each Word List. The Final Review Test can be used to assess growth at the end of the school year.

Yellow Level Word Lists

The Yellow Level Words are commensurate with Grade 4/Syllables and Affixes Stage. Each of the 25 Word Lists includes 20 pattern-based words. A Word Sort, Guided Practice Chart, Dictation Paragraph, and Pre and Post Assessment Sentences are provided for each Word List. The Final Review Test can be used to assess growth at the end of the school year.

Indigo Level Word Lists

The Indigo Level Words are commensurate with Grade 7/Derivational Constancy Stage. Each of the 25 Word Lists includes 20 pattern-based words. A Word Sort, Guided Practice Chart, Dictation Paragraph, and Pre and Post Assessment Sentences are provided for each Word List. The Final Review Test can be used to assess growth at the end of the school year.

Teacher Notes

Teacher Notes is the guidebook for the Instructional Level Spelling Program (Red through Indigo Levels). The Introduction is Dr. Rolfe’s “Getting Started” Workshop in written format. Teacher Notes includes Background Information, Word Study Lessons, and Activities (Vocabulary, Word Structure, Writing, and Specific Word Memorization) for each of the Word Lists. There are over 200 activities presented which reflect current best practice in spelling.
